Directions: The roads leading to the area are very narrow in places and the best approach from the A30 is via the minor road running south-east from Ludwell. After joining the Ox Drove follow the No Through Road sign to Rushmore.

“Imber Conservation Group have kindly invited the Branch to visit the SPTA on Sunday 19th June 2016. We will meet at Imber church (ST965484) at 10.30am for an 11.00 hours start and will finish by 4pm, but members may leave earlier if they want to.  Whilst on the ground we are required to keep together, so our walking will be guided by members of Imber Conservation Group, who will provide guides for a round of walks before lunch and a second round after lunch.

The ground we will be walking over is a bit uneven, so stout walking shoes are recommended.

Please bring your own packed lunch. We will eat at the church - inside if the weather is inclement.

Members may bring a guest or family if they wish.

Toilet facilities are likely to be rather primitive - so come prepared!

This is Geoff’s transect walk and is a good place to see the Wall Brown. There should be a variety of blues and other downland species on the wing too.
Note, there are steep banks and it is possible there will be stock on site, so no dogs. If we have time we could then go on to Cotley Hill for Marsh Fritillaries etc. in the afternoon, so bring a packed lunch. This is a joint trip with the Suffolk Branch.

This trip is planned to explore this Wiltshire Wildlife Trust Reserve near the Hampshire border finishing about 1.30 pm. Bring your own picnics. There will be more exploring in the afternoon if interest and weather permits.
Location: Meet at SU 334 616 (Map 174).
Directions: (from WWT web page) From the A338 Burbage to Hungerford road, turn towards Shalbourne and Ham. Pass through Ham heading south. The reserve is on the left hand side of the road approximately three quarters of a mile outside of the village. There is no designated parking area however there is room for 2 cars on the edge of the road beside the kissing gate at the northern end of the reserve. There is also space to park at the southern end of the Reserve by the woodland; continue along the road up the hill and take the next left turn, park here on the verge of the road to Buttermere.

Please join me on a short walk that includes as its objective a steep South West facing section of limestone Downland. Although this is the quiet mid Summer lull period for many species our objective will be to see a White Letter Hairstreak.

Directions: Meet at the tables in front of the White Hart at Ford where I will have coffee at the ready. Ford is approx 4/5 miles out of Chippenham on the A420, turn off to the left if you are approaching from Chippenham, the pub is well signposted.. Bring a packed lunch if you wish to continue wandering in the afternoon, we will cross a stream so walking boots or wellies will be a good idea.

The last time I visited Finemere was in 2005, so it’s overdue for a re-visit. There is a good chance to see Black Hairstreak and other grassland and woodland species.

Directions: Park on the side of the road where the track to the wood meets the road. This is just after the bridge over the railway track, when coming from the Grendon Underwood direction off the A41 from Bicester to Aylesbury.

This is a super place for woodland butterflies. It can be muddy in places so bring suitable footwear. Bring a packed lunch.
Location: Meet in the car park by the entrance at SU 616 621 (Map 175).
Directions: From Junction 6 of the M3 follow the A339 to Newbury until signs for the A340, take this road towards Aldermaston. Continue into Tadley and turn right at roundabout, and at the end of this road turn right at T junction. Continue and turn into Impstone Road on your right. The car park is on the left near the end of this road.

A visit to this well known Purple Emperor site to stake out this magnificient butterfly. Silverwashed Fritillaries will also be on the wing and perhaps white-letter hairstreaks.

This is a joint trip with the Dorset Branch. Martin Down National Nature Reserve is worth a visit at any time during the butterfly season. This year we shall look for the high summer species of Chalkhill Blue, Silver-spotted Skipper and possibly Adonis Blue.

Directions: Take a left turn off of the A354 dual carriageway section (Salisbury to Blandford Forum road) into the village of Martin. Take the second right turning in the village (Sillens Lane). This will take you to the South car park at SU 058 192.

This is a trip to see early summer/late spring butterflies.

Location: Meet in the Eastern Car park SU 258 292 (Map 184). Take care, as the track to the car park is notorious for its potholes. Bring a packed lunch.

Directions: Take the road North from West Dean and take the left fork towards Middle Winterslow.  In about a quarter of a mile on the left is the track into Bentley Wood.  The car park is just under another quarter of a mile down the track on the right.

I plan a day out on the Isle of Portland to see some interesting butterlies.  This is a joint trip with the Dorset Branch.

Target Species: Limestone form of Silver-studded Blue, Chalkhill Blue, Lulworth Skipper and Cretaceous form of Grayling

Location: Meet in the public car park SY 691 731 by the Portland Heights Hotel (Map 194) for the morning at Tout Quarry.  For the afternoon, meet 2pm at Perryfield Butterfly Reserve car park SY 695 712 for Church Ope Cove.  Please note that the Cove is only accessible via a flight of steep steps.

Information: Bring packed lunch and sturdy walking shoes. The trek back from the coast to the car park is all up hill, so beware.  Parking fees may apply if plans change.

There is a strong colony of Silver-spotted Skipper at this location.  Depending on the size of the party the afternoon meeting will visit another location for Brown Hairstreak.

Location: Meet in reserve car park SU 732 965  (Map 165). Turn off the M40 from Oxford towards London at Junction 6, turn left and then 2nd right onto A40 (1st right is back onto the M40). Turn right at the top of the hill and take the next right, just past the radio mast. The car park is at the end of this road. Bring lunch.

New members who have joined Butterfly Conservation in the last 12-18 months have been invited to a Welcome Event at Manor Farm followed by a guided walk around the reserve managed by our chairman Maurice Avent. This well-known SSSI (Special Site of Scientific Interest) is well worth a visit at any time.  About 30 species are seen each year.

This is a South Wiltshire Group trip to see and learn to recognise some of our rarer butterflies in the county.

Target Species: Pearl and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries, and Duke of Burgundy.

Directions: From the North take the Pitton and Farley turning off the A 30. Drive through Pitton. In Farley turn left into Ben Lane, pass the cricket field and the church with its brick tower. At the end of the road (with Blackmoor Copse on your left), you come to a T junction in the road system. Cross obliquely to the right onto a woodland hard track. Proceed for just over 100 metres to a car park on your right SU234288

This is a walk to look for White-letter Hairstreak and other woodland butterflies.

Location: Meet at ST823725 (Map 173).

Directions: Meet around the lay-by in Thickwood Lane, just off the main road from Batheaston to Ford via Colerne.

Information: An overall walk of around 3 Miles including along an attractive country lane, across a field and into ancient woodland that is owned by the Woodland Trust. The initial entry into the wood is over a style and down a steep flight of well-maintained steps. Thereafter the walk is on easy woodland paths. The wood can be muddy so walking-boots or stout footwear is advised.  A pair of binoculars may be advantageous in watching for Hairstreaks.

Sunday 3rd August 2014, 11:00 am: Martin Down & Vernditch Chase

This is a joint trip with the Dorset Branch.  The day starts with a walk across Martin Down to see Dark Green Fritillary and downland species.  After returning to the car park for lunch we will cross the A354 into Vernditch Chase woods at 14:00 to look for woodland species including White Admiral and Silver-washed Fritillary.

South Wiltshire Group to familiarise yourself with woodland butterflies and learn how a woodland can be managed for them.

Location: Meet at ST736100 (Map 194).

Target Species: White Admirals, Silver-washed Fritillaries, Purple Hairstreaks, White-letter Hairstreaks

Directions: Alners Gorse reserve entrance is on the road from Kings Stag to Hazelbury Bryan beside the Hazelbury Bryan village sign and 30 mph sign. Park on the wide straight road verge on the Kings Stag side of the village sign, well away from the dangerous bend.

Saturday 23rd August 2014, 11:00 am: Fontmell Down (butterfly recognition)

 

N.B. The B3081 is closed at Melbury Abbas, so if travelling from Shaftesbury, travel either via Ludwell on the A30 or via Fontmell Magna on the A350.This south facing steep downland in Dorset still holds a good colony of Silver-spotted Skipper. This is a South Wiltshire Group event and joint trip with the Dorset Branch.

Target Species: Silver-spotted Skipper, Chalkhill Blue, Adonis Blue


Location: Meet in reserve car park ST 886 186  (Map 183). Take the B3081 South from Shaftsbury towards Ringwood and continue straight on for Melbury Abbas (take care as these are narrow roads through the village) and then up the steep hill beyond.  As the road starts to level off there is a car park on the right.

N.B. The B3081 is closed at Melbury Abbas, so if travelling from Shaftesbury, travel either via Ludwell on the A30 or via Fontmell Magna on the A350.

This is a re-visit with the Dorset branch to this reserve at the South West corner of the county.
This time we are looking for Chalkhill Blue amongst other things. Bring a packed lunch and
be prepared for a long yet leisurely walk (approx. 5 miles). The general plan is to have lunch
by the pond in Tollard Royal.

Directions: Take the road left towards Ludwell off the B3081 road from Shaftsbury to

There is a strong colony of Silver-spotted Skipper at this location.  Depending on the size of the party the afternoon meeting will visit another location looking for Brown Hairstreak.

Location: Meet in reserve car park SU 732 965 (Map 165). Turn off the M40 from Oxford towards London at Junction 6, turn left and then 2nd right onto A40 (1st right is back onto the M40). Turn right at the top of the hill and take the next right, just past the radio mast. The car park is at the end of this road. Bring lunch.

Location: Meet at ST 987 659 (Map 173).  Take the A343 road out of Chippenham towards Devizes, turn left just after Sandy Lane village signposted Calne on the A3102, after 500 yards turn right signposted Heddington, after 1.25 miles continue straight on up a ‘green lane’ where the road kinks left, this lane provides public access to an electric substation outside which there is parking.

This trip is planned as a simple explore of a local Wiltshire Wildlife Trust Reserve.
Location: Meet at ST 898 734 by the bollards in the directions below (Map 173).
Directions: (from WWT web page) From Chippenham town centre head out on the Bristol Road. Turn into Hungerdown Lane and at mini-roundabouts (near petrol station) turn into Frogwell. Take third left turn into Moss Mead. Bear right and follow road to dead end. There is limited parking on road. Walk between bollards, across stream and grass strip. The reserve entrance is through the kissing gates.

This is our second visit to this area of grassland on the south-west Wiltshire chalk. The walk involves a stile and slopes that can be steep in places.  Bring a packed lunch.

This is a joint trip with the Dorset Branch. Martin Down National Nature Reserve is worth a visit at any time during the butterfly season.  This year we shall look for the high summer species of Chalkhill Blue, Silver-spotted Skipper and possibly Adonis Blue.

Location: Meet at SU 058 192 (Map 184).

Directions: Take a left turn off of the A354 dual carriageway section (Salisbury to Blandford Forum road) into the village of Martin.  Take the second right turning in the village (Sillens Lane).  This will take you to the South car park at SU 058 192.

This area on the edge of the plain is supposed to be a good place for looking for Brown Hairstreak.  We shall spend the morning here and after lunch move to nearby Boscombe Down to look for Adonis Blue.
